Cancer Patient Finds Renewed Hope After Fulfilling Wedding Wish: "I Don't Wanna Die"

Richard, a terminally ill cancer patient who once expressed a desire to end his life, has experienced a remarkable change of heart following his recent wedding.

Diagnosed with neck cancer in 2020, Richard's condition had progressively worsened despite surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.

He was referred to Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) for end-of-life care and pain control.

Richard had given up on life

Daily Monitor records that the wedding organized by HAU not only united Richard with his long-term partner Sylvia but also brought newfound joy and purpose to his life.

The private wedding ceremony was conducted at their home by Reverend Kiwanuka Sebunya from St Luke's Anglican Church, Makindye.

Richard, 34, and Sylvia, who have been together for several years, now share a legally recognized union that has lifted the weight of uncertainty from their shoulders.

The transformative journey began when Richard, grappling with acute pain and depression, shared his initial wish for a peaceful end to his suffering through death.

Held onto life for Sylvia and Sarah

However, the presence of Sylvia and their four-year-old daughter, Sarah, became a powerful deterrent to his once steadfast decision.

"Richard's biggest fear was that after his death, Sylvia and his daughter Sarah would not be able to stay in the family home and would be left destitute, with no claim to his property," HAU volunteer Dr Dee Ryan explained,

The clinical team not only addressed Richard's physical pain but also provided vital spiritual and psychological support.

Recognizing the importance of marriage to secure Sylvia and Sarah's future, the team played a pivotal role in making the couple's dream wedding a reality.

Wedding gave Richard new hope

The HAU team arranged for a student nurse to donate her wedding dress to Sylvia while another staff member baked a cake.

The ceremony also included the christening of their daughter, Sarah, and a touching remembrance of the couple's late infant twin.

Remarkably, in the days following the wedding, Richard experienced a significant improvement in pain control.

He expressed a newfound desire to live, attributing it to realizing the reasons for continuing his journey.

Richard's daughter has also come to understand her father's illness and overcome her fear, spending quality time with him.

Cancer patient's touching letter
