President William Ruto's daughter, Charlene Ruto, made the day for passengers in matatus by paying their fares and gifting them vouchers.

Charlene's disguised look

Charlene was disguised as a Muslim woman in a buibui, a hijab, and big shades to cover her eyes; it was difficult for people to recognise her.

"This year for Christmas, we entered random matatus (nganya) to bless people with shopping vouchers and pay their bus fares," said Charlene.

"Most people were going to work while others were going for different hustles. I am so excited. At first, I was seated with Daddy Owen but now Iam going to seat at the back with people," she added.

During her matatu trips, she learned about the people, what they do, etc.

"Even if she was disguised we are very happy," said an elated passenger.

According to musician Daddy Owen, the matatu storm was a great experience because it had been a long since they boarded a matatu.

"It was a whole day experience, interacting with commuters was great! Most commuters were young people, with different views on the state of our economy, Kenyan politics and so on; the most intriguing part was seeing the smile on their faces when I was addressing them and gifting them with a Christmas voucher and paying for their fares!," said Owen.
"I sat next to a young man on one of those trips and he told me he's going straight to the supermarket to buy Christmas shopping using the voucher and deliver it to his mum. It feels amazing to touch people's hearts and transform lives," he added.

Raila Odinga Boards Pimped out Matatu

In August 2022, Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga also enjoyed a ride to town in a newly pimped-out matatu.

Odinga had meetings with stakeholders in the matatu industry before going to Kasarani Stadium.

Raila and his Azimio brigade had a mega rally at Kasarani Stadium, where he made his final call to supporters before the polls.
