Nakuru - Former chief justice David Maraga has added another feather to his cap.

This is after Kabarak University awarded him an honorary degree for upholding the rule of law and speaking truth to power.

"The conferment of a doctorate of laws (Honoris Causa) to David Maraga is a fitting recognition of his exemplary and extraordinary contribution to the legal profession spanning 45 years," said Kabarak University Vice Chancellor Henry Kiplagat.

What are David Maraga's achievements in the legal profession

TUKO.co.ke understands that Maraga has served as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya for 13 years, which he spent as a judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal and four years as chief justice and president of the Supreme Court.

"As an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Maraga served the interests of his clients with diligence and integrity. As the chairman of the Rift Valley Law Society of Kenya, Maraga advanced the professional needs of his learned colleagues with a lot of commitment," Kiplagat added.

According to Kiplagat, in a moment of rare and remarkable judicial courage, Maraga chose the primacy of the rule of law over the pool of power and memorably proclaimed that:

"The greatness of any nation lies not in the might of its armies, important as it is. not in the largeness of its economy. important as it is also. The greatness of a nation lies in its fidelity to the constitution, strict adherence to the law, and, above all, the fear of God."

What else did Henry Kiplagat say about David Maraga

In his speech, the VC said that on the basis of these solemn words, the Supreme Court that Maraga led accomplished a rare precedential fete in the global history of presidential elections that inspired courage in election courts on the African continent.

"On September 1, 2017, the Supreme Court nullified the election of a sitting president and ordered a new vote to be held after 60 days after finding that the outcome of the election had been affected by a breach of the Constitution and Elections Act as well as irregularities," he added.

While appreciating the honour, Maraga said Kabarak University stands for and upholds Christian values, and its graduates are beneficiaries of holistic education that integrates Christian principles and values into their learning.

"I want to urge and pray for all the graduates to be dependent on God. I have had the honour and privilege to serve this nation in various capacities. I accept my nomination for the award and the high recognition of this degree with immense gratitude. Thank you very much, honorable chancellor sir, and the Kabarak University fraternity, for this great honour," he added.

Why did people want to bribe David Maraga

In a related story, TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Maraga opened up about moments when people tried to bribe him to sway judgment in courts while teaching about integrity in church.

The CJ Emeritus was at Lavington SDA, where he cautioned people not to be used and to have values. He recalled moments when he had to stand up for his integrity.

He recalled a moment in Mombasa when people tried to use a lawyer friend of his to get him to sway a certain judgment, but because of his integrity and values, he did not give in.
