Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says his affinity for classy watches and such accessories dates to years back when he was a teenager.
Murkomen has lately been under public scrutiny as he steps out in pricey watches and shoes, the naysayers attributing the affluence to supposed public funds by virtue of his holding of public office.
Why does Murkomen buy pricey watches?
Speaking on Friday, December 1, in Kakamega, where he graced the Masinde Muliru University of Science and Technology's 20th graduation as the chief guest, the CS said watches motivated him to work hard in school and that to date, he has held onto their oomph, the difference being that he currently does expensive ones.

He revealed that to fire him to work hard in school, his father would bait him with a watch, why he loves them to date.
"I saw a debate on social media about the shoes I wear and the watch. I was really surprised. I asked my wife 'Is that me?'. I even asked my sister if that was us they were talking about. We have made it to this level," he added.
"In primary school, I had a watch that was difficult to get. My father tasked me to become number one to earn it. I read until I got dizzy. I missed being number one with two marks. My father had mercy on me and bought me that watch. I think that is where my love for watches started. That passion and background should never make you give up," said Murkomen.
Murkomen's watch worth KSh 1.6m
In February this year, Murkomen caused a buzz after he was spotted wearing a pricey watch.
On Thursday, February 2, the CS hosted Silvio Albuquerque, the Brazilian ambassador to Kenya, at his office.
In one of the images, hawk-eyed Kenyans noticed the politician’s timepiece, a Hublot Classic Fusion Ceramic King Gold.
The priciest watch in the series is 45 millimetres and costs around KSh1.6 million.
Kenyans on Twitter were taken aback upon learning about the watch’s price.
