Research by Asoko Insight revealed that approximately 14.3% of the 490 surveyed family businesses reported annual revenues exceeding $50 million (KSh 7.7 billion).
Notably, over 20 companies within the study boasted annual revenues surpassing $100 million (KSh 15.4 billion), underscoring their significant economic impact.

These family-owned enterprises were spread across various sectors, including construction, agriculture, media, banking, and retail.
What Mogaka family owns in Kisii
The Mogaka family in Kisii town own several properties and businesses.
Ken Nyakundi Mogaka, the managing director, holds a bachelor of information science degree from Indiana State University (USA) and is a marketing professional with over 20 years of both local and international experience gained in various establishments.
He has extensive training and experience in distributorship operations and management and has served as managing director in the Ouru Companies for over 20 years.
According to Daily Nation, the Mogaka family owns Ouru Twin Towers, Ouru Hyper Stores, Ouru Discount Centre and Ouru Superstores.
1. Ouru Superstores Limited
Ouru Superstores Limited was incorporated in 2004 when its sales exceeded KSh 2 billion, according to its website.
The company originated as a branch of Ouru Discount Center Ltd.
Ouru Discount Center Ltd, established in 1991, traces its roots to its founders, including Ken Mogaka, who also serves as the managing director of Ouru Superstores Ltd.
Other shareholders are Lucy Mogaka, the operations director, Zablon Mogaka and Esther Mogaka (Nyakundi's wife).
Since its inception in 2004, Ouru Super Stores Limited has experienced remarkable growth.
Its focus revolves around the wholesale and distribution of consumer goods and general hardware materials sourced from prominent manufacturers in Kenya.
Ouru Superstores Ltd has its offices located in Ouru Complex Building.
2. Ouru RealtorsLtd
Ouru RealtorsLtd is a subsidiary of Ouru Superstores Limited.
The company oversees the operations of the real estate arm of investments.
It is located along Kisii - Kisumu Road.
3. Ouru Plaza
The family owned Ouru Plaza until 2016 when it was put up for sale.
An advert by Garam Investment Auctioneers indicated the iconic building in Kisii was valued at KSh 275 million.
The property's title was registered under Ken Mogaka's wife, Esther, who reportedly failed to service a bank loan.
TUKO.co.ke could not establish if the building was sold.
4. Ouru Twin Towers
Ouru Twin Towers is one of the tallest buildings in Kisii.
It is located near the Umoja Complex and boasts 10 floors with ample parking.

The bus company is owned by the family of the late businessman Ong'era Moturi.

Rodgers Moturi and Julius Ong'era Mokaya are directors of the Guardian Ltd and Nyamira Express.
