A poet has divided opinion on social media after sharing that it is not your responsibility to build your parents a home.

Why shouldn’t you build parents a house?

Sharing nuggets about home ownership, poet Matalane Mokgatla said the burden of your parent's failure to acquire property should not rest on your shoulders.

According to Mokgatla, the incessant need to build parents a home first is an emotional trap he considers a form of manipulation.

"Before building your parents a home, start with yours; even if you're the last born, you'll thank me later. Don't act by emotions. It's not your responsibility to do what your parents couldn't do. Don't let them manipulate you," wrote Mokgatla.

He warned that one is more likely to experience depression since it is tricky handling pushy family members once the "family home" is built.

Mokgatla observed that if you have to build them, set your priorities straight and start with your own.

"The stress that comes with not having your own space because you were busy with your parents will kill you, especially when siblings remind you it’s a family home and that you were not forced to build, and by that time, they only bought furniture for their bedrooms. Get your priorities straight," he added.

Netizens reacted by saying:

Jackson MrPrezident Mothapo:

"Most parents sacrificed a lot for their kid's education, and when educated, they come to social media spouting nonsense."

Nanigirl Mphela Masemola:

"I do agree. That’s the advice I give my daughters. You first, then others. Eat your money happily so without any guilt. Then, if you feel like giving us or helping, let it be from the heart, not that it’s an obligation."

Mutsharini Mutsh Dau:

"Say it louder.”

Prayer Skosana-Zulu:

“I understand your point and where it is coming from. But, I guess it differs with each background. Perhaps, if your parents have a decent house, you can just up and leave, but you find no house in other backgrounds."
