Nairobi - Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appealed to Kenyans in the diaspora not to return home.

Gachagua spoke on Friday, December 15, while presiding over the closure of the three-day Diaspora Investment Conference 2023, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi.

"Don't come back yourself; we don't need you here right now; we have enough problems with unemployment. We want you to stay outside, but you sent money here. But you will come back home eventually, but not now," said Gachagua.

Why Kenya Kwanza gov't will introduce a saving culture

The second-in-command revealed that the ruling Kenya Kwanza plans to introduce the culture of saving.

"Many countries save a lot of money, and these are the funds we borrow. Why should we borrow other people's money when we can save our own?" he asked.

Gachagua further said that the importance of the diaspora community outside the borders cannot be overemphasised.

"Over the past few years, the remittances from our brigade in the diaspora have surpassed tourism, coffee, and tea, becoming the number one foreign exchange earner for our country, and we want to enhance that," he added.

TUKO.co.ke understands that the meeting was attended by over 2,800 people from different countries, ambassadors, and investment companies.

Why Rigathi Gachagua lauded Roseline Njogu

Gachagua also commended the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Njogu, for her leadership in the docket since its establishment by President William Ruto in 2022 and her handling of the concerns raised by Kenyans living abroad.

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that a diaspora lobby announced it is set to award Kenyans living abroad who have excelled in their respective careers and made positive contributions to the country.

Good news for Kenyans in the diaspora

The Kenya Diaspora Alliance chairperson, Shem Ochuodho, announced the launch of the 2023 Diaspora Awards, saying that the event is set to celebrate and recognise the remarkable contributions and achievements of individuals from diverse Kenyan diaspora communities worldwide.

Ochuodho said the awards will be presented at the Kenya Diaspora Homecoming Convention (KDHC) 2023, bringing together exceptional individuals from various fields and highlighting the invaluable contributions of diaspora communities worldwide. It is set to be held from 6 to 8 of next month.
