Nakuru - President William Ruto has accused the opposition of sabotaging the Kenya Kwanza government's agenda for the country.

In his New Year’s message from Nakuru State Lodge, the head of state said there was something wrong with the Kenyan opposition.

The president accused them of spreading division, conflict and anarchy in the country, adding that most petitions against his policies are sponsored by people with selfish interests.

Ruto stated that Kenyans are only interested in progress and development as a country, adding that his triumph in the 2022 General Election is proof of this.

"You will agree with me that there is something fundamentally wrong with opposition without any viable alternative whose only purpose is division, conflict and anarchy. There is something wrong with litigations sponsored by hostage-taking vested interests with the sole aim to delay, derail and sabotage the delivery of public programs and defeat public interest.
Time and time again, Kenyans have clearly and manifestly demonstrated their devotion to pursuing opportunities for progress by voting for progressive policies, as they did in the last election," Ruto said.

Ruto discloses what Kenyans want

The head of state observed that most in the country are focused on what would spur the country to greatness.

He said this had been hindered over the years by various leaders who want to maintain the status quo by excluding many and benefitting a handful.

"Kenyans are ready to propel their nation to greatness. What has held them back is a leadership invested in the status quo which excludes the majority to only benefit a few. A politics comfortable with keeping millions in want and indignity to preserve the illegitimate privileges of a few and a resultant institutional system in which the disenfranchisement of ordinary people is the yardstick of public policy," he president added.

Raila threatens a return to the streets

Ruto's statement comes a day after Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga threatened to instigate anti-government protests.

He criticised the government for not fulfilling its promises, which had initially sparked optimism among the citizens.

Raila warned of rallying supporters to protest if the controversial Finance Act 2023, which raised taxes, is not repealed.
