The mother revealed that the money earned from selling the baby would be used for travelling across the state to create content for Instagram Reels.
"“After interrogation, the mother admitted to the crime and informed that she and her husband wanted to use the money to take trips across the state so that they could create content for Instagram Reels,” the Barrackpore Police Commissioner said.
The infant was subsequently rescued by the police, while the mother and the buyer, Priyanka Ghosh, were arrested.
In a disturbing twist, police also revealed that the baby's father attempted to sell their seven-year-old child, but the plan did not come to fruition.
The father is now reportedly on the run.
Further investigations are ongoing as the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate continues to handle the case.
The World Bank's note on pockets of high poverty in West Bengal adds context to the couple's desperate act.
According to a 2022 PRS Legislative Research report, the region's GDP per capita is roughly US$1,600, just slightly more than the price of a brand-new iPhone 14 at the time.
