A nine-year-old boy identified as Moses Kusasira has drowned on Lake Victoria in a swimming outing gone wrong.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Oweyesigyire, the victim was swimming with his six-year-old sister, Joy Angel Namanya, when tragedy struck.

Kids ignored warnings from father

Daily Monitor records that officers at Kibiri Police Station received information from an anonymous source at around 1:30pm regarding a suspected drowning incident.

The officers quickly rushed to the scene where they established that the youngster had, indeed, drowned.

Upon arrival, the were able to examine, document and sketch the scene of the incident after which the young boy's body was taken to the city mortuary for postmortem.

"Moses drowned during their swimming activity, despite strong warnings from their father," Oweyesigyire said.

Sister survived, in hospital

Kyakuwa Moses, a 46-year-old boda boda rider who is the father to the deceased, decried the fact that he always dissuaded his children against swimming in the absence of an adult.

The deceased boy's sister was lucky to survive and is currently receiving medical treatment at Mulago Hospital.

"Police urge the public, especially parents and guardians, to be cautious when children engage in water-related activities and to ensure their safety by providing proper supervision," Oweyesigyire warned.

The incident comes just five days after a boat transporting 34 passengers and cargo on the same lake capsized killing 25 passengers.

15 bodies recovered so far

As of the time of filing this report, the marine police unit had so far recovered 15 bodies but the search mission to recover missing bodies continues.

Fishermen from neighbouring shores said the ill-fated boat was transporting 34 passengers and cargo from Lwanabatya Landing Site.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango blamed the accident on overloading and bad weather conditions.

One of the survivors named Lawrence Kiiza said he knew they would capsize after the captain, who was struggling to control the boat, shouted that they were sinking.
