Why fuel prices increased in Tanzania
EWURA director James Mwainyekuledue cited challenges in the availability of US dollars and changes in the fuel levy.
Mwainyekuledue also noted the prices of petroleum globally had risen in the last few weeks.
"Changes in prices of petroleum products in August 2023 are mainly due to challenges in the availability of US Dollars and changes in the fuel levy, prices of petroleum products in the world market, and premiums in the importation of petroleum products," EWURA stated as reported by The Citizen.
Fuel prices in Kenya
On Friday, July 14, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) slightly reduced petrol and diesel prices by KSh 0.85 and KSh 3.96 per litre, respectively.
Petrol and kerosene retail at KSh 195.53 and KSh 173.44 after the Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel was doubled.
However, the regulator maintained the cost of automotive diesel at KSh 179.67 per litre in Nairobi.
Fuel prices in Rwanda
Despite Rwanda being a landlocked country importing fuel through the port of Mombasa, fuel in Kigali is cheaper than in Nairobi.
In June, the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) announced a reduction in pump prices, citing a drop in global crude oil costs.
“Fuel pump prices are revised downwards based on the adjustments at the international market of petroleum products," RURA tweeted.
