Trans Nzoia: Man Arrested Over Robbery Found Dead In Police Cell

Trans Nzoia - Police have launched a probe into the death of a suspected thief at the Kesogon Police Station.

According to police reports, the man who was arrested on Friday, September 1, was found dead by an officer who had gone to check on him.

A police officer on duty said he was conducting a routine check at the cell when he realised the cell door was locked from inside.

He said when he looked through the window, he saw the man suspended in the air, forcing him to break the cell door open.

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested for breaking into a building at Kesogon Shopping Centre with intent to commit robbery and was to be taken to Kipsaina Police Station.

“I went to check on the suspect who was in the post’s cell pending collection to Kipsaina Police Station, and that is when I realised something was wrong,” an officer at the facility said as reported by NTV.

What happened to suspect in holding

Confirming the incident, Trans Nzoia County Criminal Investigations Officer Francis Kihara said they had commenced the investigations.

He explained that the body had strangulation marks on the neck, and they were waiting for the autopsy report to answer some of their questions.

”The body of the deceased had strangulation marks on the neck and we are waiting for the autopsy report,” he said.

The police collected the body and took him to Kitale District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched an inquiry into the circumstances under which the man died in police custody.

Kilifi woman finds husband dead in police cell

In a separate report, 42-year-old Isaack Ngombo Lewa was found dead at Chasimba police station cells with a boxer around his neck.

His wife, Pauline Okeyo, said she visited Chonyi police station to give her husband food only to find him dead.

She stated that officers on duty laughed at her when she asked them to call him so that she could give him food.
