Mombasa - Renowned lawyer PLO Lumumba has taken a stab at the Kenyan education system saying it lacks the 'requisite' policies.

In a video shared by NTV Kenya, Lumumba who was addressing university students in Mombasa for instance claimed that some agriculture graduates can't tell a goat from a sheep.

"Today, I am told no student wants to be enrolled in agriculture. Sometimes you have an agriculture graduate who if you brought a goat and a sheep would not know the difference between the two because he has never gone to the farm," Lumumba said.

PLO Lumumba recalls his university days

As a young university student in the early 1980s, Lumumba recalled how the class was admitted to join the engineering school.

"They were only 23 of them and most of them were sponsored courtesy of the linkage between the university and some companies because there was that intimacy but today there is no intimacy between industries and universities. During my days, students of electrical engineering were sponsored by Kenya Power and Lightning Company," he explained.

According to Lumumba, leadership is the main problem facing Africa.

"If you look at the curriculum that we are using to teach whether it is in law, engineering, or survey it cant be compared to that in Korea where students go to a museum to look at those things. What then must we do? How much do we train our young leaders?" he posed.

New Kenyan university fees

In a related story, TUKO.co.ke reported that a student at Uzima University called for interventions after the institution allegedly increased the school fees for all continuing students.

Taking to social media, one of the students alleged that the institution had increased the fees from approximately KSh 79,000 to KSh 229,000.

The student wondered why the institution was increasing the fees while he was a government-sponsored student.

He said things are worse because the university wants the continuing students to pay the new fees effective September 2023.
