Nyeri - President William Ruto is set to go on a five-day tour of Mt Kenya region, days after completing a similar exercise in the coastal region.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the development tour would kick off on Saturday, August 5.

"The development, tour begins tomorrow, on Saturday 5th August 2023. The president will kick off the tour in Githurai, Kiambu county, where he'll commission the Githurai Water Supply Project. The project will supply about 35,000 cubic meters of water per day to serve over 500,000 residents of Ruiru Githurai Mwihoko and Kahawa and provide water connections to about 8,400 people," Mohamed said.

He explained that the head of state would then commission the redevelopment of the Githurai market as part of his pledge to build over 400 markets to dignify Mama Mbogas' hustle.

Ruto to meet Mt Kenya residents

The head of state is also expected to engage with the local population that voted overwhelmingly for his administration.

Ruto's tour of the region comes at a time when he okayed talks between him and political rival ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Some analysts have argued the tour of the region would give Ruto a chance to clear the air over what the discussion would involve, given top leaders from the region have been labelled hardliners by the Azimio.

"Throughout the day the president will engage as he always does with the residents in those localities concluding with a meet the people tour in Karatina town," he added.

On Sunday, August 6, Ruto will host an interdenominational prayer service at the Sagana state lodge and, later in the afternoon, chair a meeting with the region's leadership.

He will conclude the tour on Wednesday, August 6, starting with opening a three-storied 175-bed capacity, level four hospital in Narumoru.

Ruto faces resistance in Mt Kenya

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported a significant power shift as a section of Mount Kenya leaders voiced their support to former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking at Kimorori Grounds in Kenol town during a bursary issuance function, Murang’a woman rep Betty Maina explained that Uhuru worked for the interest of Mount Kenya residents and he must be given the respect he deserves.

Maina asked residents and leaders from the region to stop fighting a man who had kept his cool for a long time.
