Growing up, things were not always rosy for Dr Baba Zuri and his mum after their family fell apart when he was just a little boy and he had to start living in the streets.

In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, Dr Baba Zuri shared that all was well in their family for some time, but soon enough, his parents started quarrelling owing to his mum coming late from church.

"My father used to beat my mum, and they divorced. I don't know why my parents really liked me, but both fought for me, and in the end, my mum went back to Kisii with the other siblings while I remained with my dad," said Dr Baba Zuri.
My dad married another woman and she used to really misteat me. He took us to Kisii and left us there. I used to survive on busaa left in the house and jaggery that was used to make chang'aa," said the banker who doubles up as a businessman.

Baba Zuri ends up on the streets in Sotik

Dr Baba Zuri ended up on the streets in Sotik, where he survived on stolen sugarcane and bananas.

A woman in the neighbourhood saw him and took him in, and as luck would have it, she took him back to school at Tonga Omunori Primary School.

"I scored 363 marks out of the possible 500 marks and she took me to high school. She also helped me find my mum. In Form Three, the lady died and she was the one paying my school fees and buying us food.
"At Nyakoiba High School whenever we were chased for school fees I would line up with those paying school fees and waste time until 2 pm when they would no longer chase us for school fees.," remembered Dr Baba Zuri.

The entrepreneur said that at some point, his mum worked as a housemaid, and he would eat and run away before the owners returned.

How Baba Zuri dodged paying for school fees

"I was chosen as a student leader in Form Three and Form Four and was friendly to the teachers; I used to get them water for bathing and other uses and that is how I survived without paying fees," said the Political Scientist and a Clinical Psychologist.

Dr Baba Zuri got direct entry into university and moved to Nairobi, where he became a security guard at a lady's residence.

Afterwards, the hardworking man moved on to the Super Loaf company and worked there for only one month.

At the company, they would give him two or three loaves of bread every day, which he would sell to his friends and neighbours...that is how he got customers.

What did Dr Baba Zuri study at Multimedia University?

"After one month I got my first salary, KSh 4000 and knew this is not what God destined for me. I started with one crate and became a wholesaler. Before joining Multimedia University, I also taught at Brightstar Secondary School.

At Multimedia University, Dr Baba Zuri majored in Political Science and Psychology.

Now, he is at the University of Nairobi (UoN) studying Masters in Political Science. While studying at the school, his entrepreneurial spirit grew even bigger.

"At the Multimedia University of Kenya, I used to go to school with a boda boda and start working immediately after classes," he said.
"My first job was at the National Youth Council where I volunteered for almost eight months working for free without pay. I used to walk to work daily and would repeat clothes since I didnt have official or serious clothes.

At the moment, Dr Baba Zuri works for Post Bank and runs a few businesses. Additionally, he is a politician, and in the 2022 General Election, he vied to be a Member of the County Assembly for South B ward.

After years of toiling and watching his mum live without a home, Dr Baba Zuri started building his mum a three-bedroom house with a perimeter wall surrounding it.

"It also boasts a dining room, kitchen, and store. Up to now, I have spent more than KSh 5 million, including the land," said Dr Baba Zuri.
"I'm excited about the project, it is the first permanent house in our lineage. All the others are grass, mud houses. My mum is very excited as well. Iam now in the process of building the perimeter wall," he shared.
