As parents, guardians, teachers, and students celebrate good results from the Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023, one fact remains knocking - admission fees for the 2024 academic calendar.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu said during the release of KCSE 2023 results on Monday, January 8, that 201,133 candidates attained minimum university entry points.

How much do Kenyan private schools charge in fees?

These results were posted by both public and private schools in Kenya; most of them—elite schools in Nairobi—charge up to a high of KSh 1 million in tuition fees annually.

Kenya's capital city was ranked top among six African cities with the most expensive elite schools.

Below is a list of the most expensive private schools in 2024.

1. Peponi School

Peponi School is one of East Africa's leading international schools in Nairobi, Kenya.

According to the International Schools database, Peponi School tuition for an 11-year-old in grade 6 is KSh 2.2 million, plus other charges included.

These are the application fee (KSh 7,500), registration fee (KSh 15,000) and caution deposit (KSh 500,000), making the total KSh 2.7 million, paid in trimesters.

2. St. Andrews Turi

St. Andrews Turi's fee structure 2024 indicates a tuition fee amounting to KSh 1.12 million per year.

A registration deposit of 50% of one term’s boarding fees per child is required to reserve an offered place.

The deposit is refunded when leaving the school, and there is a 5% discount on basic fees for second and subsequent children.

3. Merishaw School

Merishaw School is a boys' junior & senior school located in Isinya - Kajiado County.

The school offers the Kenyan National Curriculum of Education.

According to the 2024 Merishaw School Fee Structure, fees per year for grade 7 is KSh 454,800 and form 1 (KSh 466,800).

A 5% discount is applied on tuition fees for siblings (T & C apply). The school also charges a non-refundable reservation fee of KSh 20,900.

Other charges such as caution, admission, project, coding, book fund, activity and medical fees amount to KSh 43,700

4. Rusinga School

A 1-year-old is admitted to Rusinga Schools for a total of KSh 291,000 per year.

The International Schools database indicated that in the first year of enrolment, the price would be KSh 310,000 due to additional one-time fees.

5. Brookhouse School

Brookhouse International School's tuition fee for year one entry is KSh 400,000 per term.

Parents pay KSh 745,000 per term for year six admission, while year 7 and 8 fees are KSh 750,000 per term and KSh 1.25 million for boarding per term.

6. Moi Educational Centre High School

Moi Educational Centre High School offers a Kenya Education Curriculum from kindergarten primary to secondary school.

In 2023, term one fees at the Moi Educational Centre High School ranged between KSh100,000 and KSh120,000, depending on the class of the learner.

According to Business Daily, it was one of Kenya's expensive private schools that hit parents with increased fees.

7. Moi High School, Kabarak

Moi High School, Kabarak fee structure for the 2024 academic calendar shows total fee per year ranges to about KSh 200,000.

The tuition fees vary depending on the class, and the amount due by each student is billed every term.

8. Nova Pioneer

Nova Pioneer is a private school offering both Kenyan and international curriculum.

The school is located at Tatu City, Nairobi, and in Eldoret, with two wings - for boys and girls.

According to the 2024 School Fees Schedule, grades 7 & 8 tuition fee is KSh 435,000, which sums up to KSh 632,550 when other fees are included.

Form 1 tuition fee is KSh 480,600, totalling up to KSh 678,150 plus other fees.

For the Eldoret branch fee structure, grades 7 & 8 pay KSh 347,100, amounting to KSh 500,700 plus other fees

Form one pays KSh 372,600, which adds up to KSh 526 200 plus other fees.

9. Pembroke House School

Pembroke House School is an international school that charges a KSh 306,300 tuition fee per year for a one-year-old.

According to the International School Database, fees are paid in the trimester (KSh 102,100 × 3).

10. Hillcrest International School

The tuition fee for year one at Hillcrest International School is KSh 1.12 million plus a deposit of KSh 25,000, based on the 2023 fee structure.

Year 6 pays KSh 2.1 million plus a KSh 50,000 deposit, while years 7 & 8 fees are KSh 2.2 million plus a KSh 50,000 deposit.

Why do private schools raise fees?

In 2023, private schools notified parents of an increase in tuition fees at the start of the academic calendar.

The 47% increase was attributed to the rising inflation due to increased fuel and food prices.

The letters sent to parents also detailed the increase in lunch, transport based on the route, and other fees.
