Nakuru - Five people have been confirmed dead, while 11 others sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident along the Kericho-Nakuru highway.
Police in Mau Summit within Nakuru have launched an investigation into the cause of the fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the morning of December 2, 2023, at about 2:45am.
How the Londiani junction accident occurred
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the accident occurred near the Molo-Londiani junction along the Kericho-Total-Nakuru highway.

"The ill-fated motor vehicle, registration number KDM 709Z, a Toyota matatu belonging to Obamana Sacco, was moving from Kericho towards Nakuru direction when the driver (who is currently unconscious) rammed into a motor vehicle, registration number KAU 614V, a Nissan UD truck that was in front, heading towards Nakuru direction and being driven by Rufas Njoroge Kagwe, 38," NPS said in the statement posted on X.
The NPS said that due to the impact, four (4) male adult passengers on board the matatu and a juvenile aged about two years died on the spot.
"Eleven of the passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Molo and Londiani hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment," the NPS further said.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Londiani Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.
In a related story, TUKO.co.ke reported that at least six people died and several others were left with varying degrees of injuries after a grisly accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
How TEAM SWAT Sacco matatu was involved in accident
The accident occurred on the dawn of Monday, November 27, after a matatu belonging to TEAM SWAT Sacco hit a truck from behind.
The accident happened at Kinungi Flyover on your way to Naivasha from Nakuru town.
"KDG 063Y SWAT TEAM, just as you slope from Flyover towards Naivasha, 5 people are dead this early morning as the rest are in critical condition," Cops Kenya said in a tweet.
Five people died on the spot, while the sixth died while receiving treatment at Naivasha sub-county hospital.
Photos shared by Sikika Road Safety on X from the accident scene showed the harrowing magnitude of the accident as the matatu was severely damaged.
