Tana River - Pastor Ezekiel Odero extended his charitable gesture to the victims of the El Nino floods on the lower coast during Christmas on Monday, December 25.

The founder of New Life Prayer Centre and Church took donations valued at upward of KSh 10 million to the households affected by the floods.

Given out were foodstuffs and other essentials.

Why Ezekiel Odero chose flood victims for his donation

He partnered with the county government to make good his promise to the people.

"When I heard about the floods, I looked for the governor who made sure that we arrived here safely and everything went on as planned," Citizen TV quoted the preacher as having said.

The preacher also sought to absolve the county and national governments of any accusation as regards the floods.

According to Ezekiel, the magnitude of the raging waters had not been foreseen when allocations were being made.

He suggested that much had been done to mitigate the calamity and its effects.

"Truth be told, sometimes we blame the county and national governments for the floods but they had already done their budgets before the floods came," said the preacher.

The county is among the many others affected by floods occasioned by heavy rains in the recent past.

The meteorological department had announced that in the early weeks of November 2023, months after predicting El Nino climate patterns, parts of the country would experience heavier rains running into December.

Ezekiel, known to wade in affluence, has participated in other charitable causes previously.

I don't use church funds, Ezekiel

Earlier, he clarified that he never uses church funds for such ventures.

Appearing before the Senate Ad Hoc Committee investigating the Shakahola deaths in October this year, the cleric revealed that he would never touch the church's offerings.

Ezekiel disclosed that he had informed his family that no one would be allowed to use the church's offering.

The preacher stated that he had started a poultry business, and its proceeds would be used to educate his three children.

"I never came to use church money for personal benefit. I've informed my wife and my children nobody will benefit from church money. Nimeanzisha kufuga kuku; niliambia mke wangu tangu last week, pesa za kuku, mayai na whatever zisomeshe watoto wetu hakuna haja kutumia pesa za kanisa," Ezekiel stated.

Ezekiel confessed that it is true that most churches have a hard time explaining matters to do with church offerings.

The preacher challenged the committee to summon other preachers across the country and put them to task over what they've done with the offertory they receive.

"Do you know that sometimes, pastors are afraid to speak the truth about offerings, but I came here to tell you the truth about offerings? If it's not too much, what do you do with it? And I also ask that you inquire about how many people are in your church and what you do with the offering," Ezekiel posed.
