Nyeri - A police officer who killed a Nyeri resident, Gregory King'ori Kanyi, during an arrest in 2015 has been handed a seven-year jail sentence.
During his sentencing on Thursday, December 14, Justice Martine Muya stated that since the charge had been reduced to manslaughter, it would be good to have Chibungu Sanga jailed,
"It is only fair that the accused serve the term since the offence was reduced from murder to manslaughter," Muya said as reported by Nation.

The court had reduced the charge in a ruling on Thursday, November 30, explaining that the prosecution had failed to show it was a murder charge.
Justice Muya also said the prosecution had proven that the accused used excessive force during the arrest.
Sanga's lawyer, Emmanuel Mwagambo, asked the court to give him a non-custodial sentence, but the prosecution and Kanyi's family lawyer opposed it.
Kanyi's elderly father said the family had not been the same since that fateful night eight years ago.
What happened to Kanyi
According to court documents, Sanga arrived at Kanyi's home in response to a complaint of assault.
He had reportedly gotten into a physical confrontation with another police officer, Constable Huja Macharia, at a bar in Mukurweini town.
When they arrived at the deceased's house, they surrounded it before Kanyi opened the door for them.
However, Sanga claimed Kanyi came out wielding a machete and jumped behind him, injuring his hand.
The former Police Constable revealed that he was the only armed officer forcing him to fire in the air before fatally shooting Kanyi in the chest.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) announced that it had on Thursday, July 27, arrested the Officer-in-Charge of Zimmerman Police Post in Kasarani Division, Inspector of Police Susan Wambui Muiruri, to face corruption charges.
"The arrest came after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) concurred with the recommendations of EACC to charge the Police Inspector with two (2) counts of soliciting and receiving a bribe from the complainant to facilitate the release of his pregnant girlfriend who had been arrested and detained at Kasarani Police Station. The offence was committed on 25th April 2021," EACC said in a statement.
