Kenya's second-largest telecommunications company, Airtel, has increased its per transaction limit from KSh 150,000 to KSh 250,000.

In a statement on Thursday, August 31, the telco said the new rate will be effective Friday, September 1.

Airtel said raising the limit came after it got approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

"Airtel Money Kenya Ltd will revise its per transaction limit to KSh 250,000 from the previous KSh 150,000 per transaction.

Transaction charges for this band will remain similar to those that were previously charged under the KSh 70,000 to KSh 150,000 band," Airtel stated.

Why Airtel increased per transaction limit

The company explained that the new limit, increased by KSh 100,000, will help customers do large transactions conveniently.

As such, they would not have to do multiple smaller transactions.

"The incorporation of the KSh 150,001 to KSh 250,000 band of transactions without any further transaction charges is part of our strive to empower our customers with flexible and personalised solutions while at the same time delivering to them exceptional value for their money. That signifies our commitment towards convenience and affordability,” Airtel Money Kenya MD Anne Kinuthia-Otieno said.

What is Airtel's daily limit?

A fortnight ago, Airtel increased its daily mobile money transaction limit to KSh 500,000, up from KSh 300,000.

In a statement on Tuesday, August 15, the company said that raising the limit would benefit a wide range of its customers, including businesses and government agencies.

The firm revealed it had tripled its number of mobile agents and targets to cross the 120,000 mark by the end of the year.

Why Safaricom increased M-Pesa limit

On Monday, August 14, Safaricom increased its daily M-Pesa account limit to KSh 500,000.

Initially, mobile money account limits for M-Pesa users were capped at a maximum of KSh 300,000 per day, limiting several users who desired to transact with more daily amounts.

The new development came following approval by the Central Bank of Kenya.

"Starting Tuesday, August 15, 2023, all M-Pesa customers will enjoy increased daily transaction limits and increased account limits of KSh 500,000 following approval from the @CBKKenya," tweeted Safaricom.
