Nairobi - In a previous media interview, former Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi revealed that were it not for Mwai Kibaki (deceased), his predecessor Daniel Arap Moi (also deceased) would have been jailed.
Speaking to Nation.Africa, Kiraitu said that when Kibaki took over in 2002, there was a lot of pressure from civil society to have Moi pay for the atrocities committed during his 24-year rule.
However, Kibaki stopped them in their tracks, saying he did not wish revenge and wished to unite the nation.
Almost 21 years later, the same scenario appears to be playing out in the country if the tribulations facing former president Uhuru Kenyatta are anything to go by.

Edwin Sifuna's tough warning to Kenya Kwanza
Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna has warned the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration against intimidating and harassing Uhuru, saying that what goes around comes back around.
Speaking to Citizen TV on the morning of Thursday, July 27, Sifuna told President William Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary to pray to their God that they remain in power forever "because the seeds that they have sowed will eventually reap them."
"We have had a history in this country whereby we didn't go after retired presidents. We didn't see the sort of revenge and vindictiveness from a regime like what we are witnessing now. In the past, people would just be elected and proceed to serve the electorate," Sifuna said.
The ODM secretary-general observed that it was clear that the main agenda of this government was to revenge on the people they perceived to have treated them badly when they were in power.
"I may not be a prophet but when I close my eyes I can already see that headline saying; ex-CS Kindiki protests police visit to his house, I can already see the breaking news item, Ruto addressing the press at night at his mother's house because police have come here," he said.
Why more Kenyans are likely to run for office
Sifuna warned that should this vicious circle continue, in the end people are going to run for office and perpetuate themselves in power only either to protect themselves from revenge or perpetuate revenge on people they perceive to have wronged them.
"I pray to God that they remain in power forever because what goes around comes back around. As a young leader myself, I would wish that we see a new country, I would wish that it doesn't matter what somebody did or did not do during their time in power you leave them to be when you are elected," he explained.
Uhuru Kenyatta meets news editors
In a related story, TUKO.co.ke reported that Uhuru disclosed his willingness to support Ruto's administration.
Speaking to news editors on Monday, July 24, Uhuru said he was open to meeting the Kenya Kwanza Alliance leader.
Despite supporting ODM leader Raila Odinga in the last election, Uhuru said Ruto is currently his president following the outcome of the 2022 state house race.
Uhuru insisted that just like he approached Kibaki and Moi when he was in power, Ruto is supposed to look for him.
