After a year upcountry, Bosire decided to return to Nairobi to hustle.

“I called my friend Frank who hails from a neighbouring village, and he told me to come to the city and help him supply eggs and smokies.”

Once in the city, Bosire asked Frank if they could buy a trolley and sell boiled eggs and smokies.

“He asked if I had the courage to sell the snacks despite having a degree. It took me three weeks to undergo training under his instruction.”

Bosire then purchased a trolley for three weeks and set it up at the Kenya National Archives in the CBD. He invested KSh 3,000 in stock, but business was slow on the first day.

“Competition was stiff, and we sold one tray of eggs and only two smokies.”

Aside from the low sales, Bosire was also confronted by county enforcement officers and had to close shop.

“We paid returns to allow us to work in the CBD- you can pay daily or weekly.”

Bosire then appealed on Twitter, hoping to attract students from universities in the CBD.

His Tweet went viral, and Kenyans on Twitter showed up in huge numbers to support his business.

“We had almost KSh 5,000 sales on that day,” said Bosire, noting that it marked the start of changing fortunes.

Bosire disclosed that he now makes between KSh 3,000 to KSh 4,000 in profits.

“However, if I open shop at 2pm and work till morning on the next day, I can earn up to KSh 8,000.”

Bosire, whose dream is to open a restaurant chain, advised jobless graduates by saying:

“You can’t find white-collar jobs at your disposal, and the only option is to grab opportunities in the streets.
Put your degree aside and monetise opportunities- they can help you get another chance.”
