A junior employee of Kenya Rural Roads Authority, whose KSh 21.2 million was frozen a week ago over suspicions of being proceeds of corruption, has moved to court to protest the decision.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission flagged the KSh 21.2 belonging to Daniel Wambua over suspicions that he acquired a humongous amount of money through illicit ways.

What did the employee's lawyer tell court?

In a report by Citizen TV, through his lawyer Danstan Omari, Wambua said the money in question was meant for paying his lover's dowry and had been raised by family and friends.

He said he could no longer fulfil his requirements of paying the bride price after the EACC had his account frozen, saying the whole incident has left him embarrassed, especially before his in-laws.

Through Omari, the man said he could defend how he attained his assets, further disputing claims that he earns KSh 55,000 as alleged by EACC, saying he gets KSh 170,000 as his remuneration.

“The amount in the Daniel Wambua Dowry Payment Account number 0840184059257 was specifically for the purpose of collecting funds from friends and well- wishes for the purposes of Dowry payment for my intended marriage to my wife of choice,” court papers indicated.

In his petition, he attached the details of the WhatsApp group through which the funds are said to have been raised and also his payslips.

He lamented that the freezing of his accounts had halted the dowry plans.

EACC goes after Wambua

Wambua is believed to have partaken in corruption malpractices such as the dissipation of public funds, conflict of interest, bribery, and abuse of office to accumulate the said wealth.

The EACC wants the court to grant its prayer of having Munywoki's accounts held for at least six months to; allow investigators enough time to carry out their work and also prevent transfers or withdrawals.

The anti-graft body suspected Munywoki acquired the monies fraudulently through the dissipation of public funds and instances of bribery.

He is said to have acquired the money within four months.
