Eldoret - Opposition leader Raila Odinga has hit out at United States Ambassador Meghan Whitman and reminded her that Kenya is not a colony of her nation.

Coming a day after Whitman said that President William Ruto defeated the ODM leader fair and square during the 2022 polls, a visibly-agitated Raila told him to keep off from Kenyan politics.

Speaking at the Devolution Conference in Eldoret while giving his keynote speech, the Opposition chief told the US envoy to "keep your mouth shut" and even threatened, "we will call for your recall back to your country".

The political mogul defended the anti-regime protests that he sanctioned, saying they have united teams from the government and Opposition.

"Finally, I want to tell the rogue ambassador. Leave Kenyans alone. If Maandamano can lead to dialogue between Kalonzo and Ichung'wah, then everything is good with Maandamano. Tell the rogue ambassador Kenya is not the US, Kenya is not a colony of the US, keep your mouth shut or we will call for your recall back to your country," Raila said as his supporters in the conference ululated.

Musalia meets Meg Whitman

As Raila was firing at the US envoy, she spent her Thursday meeting with Prime Cabinet Secretary Moses Wetang'ula.

Mudavadi, who dumped Raila's faction to work with Ruto's Kenya Kwanza, reiterated that the Kenya-US partnership had enhanced security in the country.

"Our partnership has also enhanced security, increased prosperity, and improved the lives of Kenyans and Americans, becoming a model for benchmarking by other nations," Mudavadi said.

What did Meg Whitman say at Devolution conference?

On Wednesday, August 17, Meg maintained that the 2022 General Election was free, fair, credible, and a hallmark in Kenya's electioneering history.

At the official opening of the 2023 Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Whitman said all election observers agreed that President William Ruto won the 2022 state house race.

According to Whitman, the ruling by the Supreme Court affirmed that testimony that the elections were transparent.

Whitman's comments were made at wrong forum, lawyer

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Nairobi-based lawyer Julius Miiri opined that while Whitman's sentiments were true, she raised them at the wrong forum, thus setting the stage for a political showdown.

"The wrong forum because instead of talking about devolved governance, she chose to talk about elections. This was what was captured by Kenyans and the media. It would have been different if the sentiments captured were on devolution rather than an election which has now already passed," she added.

The law expert said politics in Kenya are emotive and it was inevitable for her comments not to spark emotions from both side of the divide.

"In diplomacy you need to be very careful lest you are branded of taking sides. She will have a hard time showing that she is not a mere tribal diplomat because this is what Azimio will try and propel," he added.

The lawyer, nonetheless, maintained only the government can sanction the recalling of an envoy and Raila's threat to have Whitman constitutionally hold no water.
