Nairobi-based motivational speaker Sam Vidambu has taken to his Facebook page to express disbelief over his exorbitant electricity bill.

Vidambu shocked by his power bill for July

Despite his frequent travels and solitary residency, Vidambu was perplexed to find a staggering KSh 27,000 power bill for the month of July 2023.

According to his Facebook post, where he aired his grievances, Vidambu said his usage primarily included essential household appliances.

These include appliances such as a laundry machine, refrigerator, electric gas cooker, hot shower, and electronic devices like a TV, radio, and laptop.

"KPLC KPLC KPLC. Wueeh..so I have checked my Kenya Power bill for July 2023. It's 27,000. I am rarely in the house because my work involves travelling throughout the country,'" he wrote.
"I stay alone. I only use power for my laundry machine, refrigerator, electric gas cooker, hot shower and TV, radio, and laptop. Kenya Power, Wueeeh," he added.

Vidambu reveals he's never at home

Vidambu was left astounded by the steep electricity bill, given his minimal occupancy at home due to work-related travel.

The revelation of Vidambu's hefty electricity bill comes in the wake of an Auditor General's report that has cast a shadow on the billing practices of Kenya Power.

Vidambu's post sparked a flurry of reactions from netizens, with some empathizing with his plight and others attempting to explain the potential factors behind such a high bill.

Vidambu told TUKO.co.ke that he was yet to make inquiries at Kenya Power, but his research had indicated his meter could have been listed as a commercial one.

"I'll visit them this week. But am told it might be registered as a commercial account," he told TUKO.co.ke

Netizens react to Vidambu's power bill

Mediator Patty Kosse wrote:

"That could be some typing error, are you able to take a picture of thff etc meter reading and take it to Kenya power by yourself ? They will assist you."

Jude Obegi advised:

"Check the meter reading in the app and the one in your meter.sometimes they estimate more than you have used. Also submitted your readings monthly around 9th to 13th/every month.on *977#.if you do that.you will be able to know how many units you use each month and the estimate the price.but the cost of power have gone up this year.and he will go up more due to the high cost of fuel due to the taxbill."

Cecilia Non Quitter wrote:

"Gosh,I thought I was the only one,my bill this month acha to ,I almost fainted."

Sarah Nyandat wondered:

"You still get bills? We buy tokens of what we consume.Get the token meter box for your peace of mind."

Kevin Kimani Nderu wrote:

"Welcome to the club bro. I complained about this to KPLC nikachoka ....... My billed tripled without any explanation."

KPLC's billing woes and Auditor General's report

TUKO.co.ke previously reported Kenyans using electricity supplied by Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) have been paying 20% more than they consume.

The auditor general report to the National Assembly Committee on Energy showed that KPLC inflated power bills do not match actual consumer consumption.

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu revealed that charges loaded to the consumer cannot be traced to KPLC's billing systems.

“Almost 20% of the bill to consumers cannot be matched to actual consumption neither can the distribution company attribute it to a specific consumer,” said Gathungu, as quoted by Daily Nation.
