Eldoret - Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has asked Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to ban Noah and Voxy cars operating as Public Service Vehicles.

Sudi said the cars were not licensed to operate as PSVs plying different routes in the country.

The lawmaker explained that the vehicles had caused many accidents because of over-speeding, among other issues.

"Things to do with public transport, those cars like the Voxy do not have permission to work as matatus and they have killed a lot of people. I have told Murkomen I do not know whether he has taken any action, we are going to ban them," Sudi said.

Shortcuts by Kenyans

He urged Kenyans to avoid using underhand routes to achieve their goals, and if they are in a hurry, they should plan properly to ensure they reach their destination in good time.

"And to the public, do not use shortcuts to get things done, use vehicles that have a license to operate," he said.

The close William Ruto ally was speaking at the burial ceremony of Nelson Kiptanui in Ainabkoi. Kiptanui died in a road accident.

Voxy driver: We are not the problem

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, Josphat Mutero, a Voxy driver plying the Nairobi-Nakuru highway and airport exchange, said the move to ban the vehicles from operating in the public sector is ill-advised.

Mutero explained that the accidents could not be entirely blamed on the Voxy drivers because of other underlying issues.

"The reason why we overspeed is because we have pressure from the owner of the car to make as much money as possible and we also want to pay ourselves. We want to do as many trips as possible to make money for us and the owner," Mutero said.

Questioned about the move to ban the operation of seven-seater cars, he said it is going to kill the economy because they purchase PSVs' licenses and go for service maybe twice a month.

The backbone of the economy

He disclosed that uncountable Kenyans depend on the sector to provide for their families, and killing the business would cause ripple effects across the board.

"The Kenyans that depend on this business cannot be wished away because closing the business would be killing them gradually because they use these cars to pay school fees, rent and provide for the family in general," he said in a phone call interview with TUKO.co.ke.

Mutero further said that many owners of the vehicles borrowed a loan from a financial institution of choice, and they also have guarantors. They will be auctioned if their assets are kept out of service.

He asked the government to closely consider Kenyans at the bottom of the pyramid who entirely depend on small business ventures to enrich their lives.
