Nairobi - President William Ruto has defended the remarks by the United States Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, regarding the 2022 General Election.

Speaking at the official 2Jiajiri/GIZ Graduation Ceremony, Kasarani, Nairobi, the president hit out at ODM leader Raila Odinga for criticising the US envoy despite her simply stating facts.

Why William Ruto defends Meg Whitman

According to Ruto, Ambassador Meg only made a factual statement regarding the outcome of the 2022 elections in which he defeated the ODM leader.

"The American ambassador said two statements of fact, that the 2022 election was free and fair, which is a statement of fact. She also said Kenya is open for business, which is also a statement of fact. Surely let us have some decorum and respect ourselves as we demand respect from others," Ruto said.

At some point, the head of state fell short of labelling the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader as a rogue for his anti-government protests.

"I was asking myself, between the people organising demonstrations and destroying property and the U.S Ambassador, who is rogue? I leave it up to Kenyans to decide," he stated.

Ruto hosts Senator Chris Coons

Sentiments by Ruto came a few hours after he hosted United States senator Chris Coons and Ambassador Meg at State House Nairobi.

In a statement, Ruto said the Delaware senator appreciated Kenya as being one of the most vibrant democracies in the world.

The head of state disclosed that their meeting centred on global security issues, climate change, and the devolution sector's achievements.

"At State House, Nairobi held talks with US Senator Chris Coons, who appreciated Kenya as one of the most vibrant democracies in the world. Also discussed global security issues, climate change and the progressive path of devolution in Kenya," Ruto said.

The president affirmed that Kenya was keen to enhance its relationship with the United States to expand trading opportunities for both countries.

"Kenya is keen on enhancing its relations with the United States to expand trade and investment opportunities for citizens of both nations. This mutually beneficial partnership will extend to climate change mitigation efforts and environmental conservation," he added.
