The advert called for the application of more than 1,900 vacant positions across the country.

It advertised vacant positions, including field officers, trained teachers, community health workers, social workers, clinical officers, interns, and customer service, among others.

What makes the job advert fake?

According to Safaricom, all job openings in the company are found on the recruitment portal.

A spot check on the company's job portal did not show any such openings for January 2024 recruitment.

The only job openings at the portal include M-Pesa Africa - Evergreen Requisition Specialist – Cyber Security Prevent and Defense, which closes on March 13 and 15, 2024.

The email used in the fake job advert has an extension of @outlook.com, which raises eyebrows.

Fake job alert in Kenya

Safaricom is not the only company scammers use to send fake job alerts to Kenyans.

In December 2023, The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) management said they currently don't have any vacancies.

KNH termed an advert trending on social media as fake and warned members of the public against falling into the traps of scammers.

The fake advertisement indicated KNH was recruiting for 1,446 positions, including registered nurses.

In the same month, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) dismissed a job advertisement circulating online purporting to offer vacancies at the organisation.

It asked Kenyans to only apply for jobs advertised through its website as it noted its official email ends with go.ke.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) also raised an alarm over fake jobs being offered by unscrupulous individuals in the local media on its behalf.
