The family of Vallery Amondi, the young girl from Muhoroni whose leg was amputated, has pleaded with well-wishers to help their daughter acquire a prosthetic leg.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the family expressed gratitude for the support they received from various people who have been helping the young girl fund chemotherapy sessions at Fairmont hospital in Kisumu.

Cost of prosthetic leg after amputation

Valary is currently moving on crutches and a gift of a prosthetic leg will be a big step towards improving her mobility even as she plans to resume school in 2024.

“She’s doing well, the last chemo last week, she had gained some kgs from 30 to 34,” said Stella Tande, a family friend who has closely been monitoring her progress.

The family intimated that they had received a quote for the prosthetic leg from a Nairobi-based facility that provided two options for the mobility device.

For the first option, they quoted KSh 1,082,136.46 for what they describe as fitting of transfemoral amputation with liner. This treatment, they said, would last 4-6 weeks and would include fitting the above-knee prosthesis.

“This treatment proposal is non-committal. A definite quotation can only be elaborated after an anamnesis, examination, counselling and possible tests have been undertaken,” the quote from Ottobock Patient Care Center Nairobi read.
The second option was quoted at KSh 923,373.51. “Fitting with an above-knee prosthesis including the following services and components: Plaster cast, design of two individual test sockets, fabrication of the definitive socket in liner technology, adjustments, design of a cosmetic foam cover, gait and usage training,” the second quote read.

Dropped out of school after cancer diagnosis

The young girl had enrolled at Muhoroni Secondary School before her health took a hit, and her life stagnated at Form Three. She was diagnosed with bone cancer which led to the amputation of one of her legs.

She has, however, maintained her bright smile despite the ordeal, thanks to the support her friends, led by child model Eileen Akinyi, are giving her.

For Christmas, Eileen led a group of kids and raised KSh 15,000 to help the family acquire basic needs. For every chemo session they attend, the family has to part with at least KSh 20,000. The sessions are monthly.

Valary’s mother can be reached on 0719203945. The Pay Bill is 522533, and Account No is 7743657.
