Nairobi - A traffic police officer based at Shauri Moyo Police Traffic Base has been arrested after demanding a bribe.

Dobin Peter Naibei was arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) following a report by a member of the public.

A report by KBC revealed that Naibei had arrested a motorist and detained his vehicle for allegedly having an invalid motor vehicle insurance.

Naibei was reportedly demanding a bribe before he could release the vehicle that had been impounded.

The driver allegedly refused to give him the bribe and went ahead to report the case to EACC, which mounted an operation.

EACC arrests Naibei

The rogue police officer was arrested Thursday, December 14, night and detained at Kilimani Police Station as he awaited processing at the commission.

Confirming the officer's arrest, EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said that they were enhancing surveillance on highways across the country to enforce anti-corruption laws.

Naibei faces bribery charges contrary to section 6(1) (a) as read with Section 18 of the Bribery Act of 2016.

EACC pointed out that some motorists deliberately violate traffic laws and seek to bribe law enforcement officers.

"In this regard, motorists are advised to comply with all traffic laws and report any suspected incidents of corruption to EACC for action," he said.

IG Japhet Koome confesses he has rejected bribes

In a related report, Inspector General Japheth Koome publicly acknowledged widespread corruption within the National Police Service.

He referred to this issue as "returns" and explained that junior officers would collect money and deliver it to their superiors.

Koome recounted instances where junior officers attempted to offer him proceeds from corrupt activities, which he refused.

"Some have even come to my office trying to give me something, but I refused. We must end this. Colleagues, it comes a time when we say enough is enough," Koome added.

The IG emphasised the need for the police service to take a stand against corruption, declaring, "enough is enough".
