Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has expressed his pride in World Athletics Champion Mary Moraa after her exemplary display in the recently concluded championship in Budapest, Hungary.

The IG showered praises on the 800m Gold Medalist when the two held a meeting in his Office at the police headquarters in Nairobi.

Moraa made the police service proud

In a statement by the National Police Service, Koome waxed lyrical about Moraa, adding that she had made the police service proud.

The IG advised Corporal Moraa and her fellow NPS athletes to uphold discipline, and shun malpractices particularly doping.

Moraa, who joined the Administration Police Service as a Constable in 2021, currently serves under the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) responsible for emergency response to public disorders.

Photos show the IG and the young athletic officer exchanging pleasantries with smiles doting their faces.

Moraa beat pre-race favorites

Moraa' put up a stunning performance in the World Athletics Championships 2023 and clinched gold in the Women's 800-meter race.

She posted her personal best of 1:56.03 in Budapest, flooring the pre-race favourites Keely Hodgkinson who clocked 1:56.34, and Athing Mu of USA doing 1:56.61.

Before the race, World Athletics had taken to its official social media channels for their pre-race hype, captioning the video 'Heavy is the head that wears the crown.'

"Dancing queen 800m queen. Kenya's Mary Moraa literally flies to golden 800m glory after two crazy laps around the track. 1:56.03 PB, how about that!" read the caption by World Athletics after she crossed the line first.

Out of the 10 medals won by Kenya in Budapest, five were bagged by officers from the police service.
