Nairobi - The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has released a statement regarding the alleged arrest of the former Kakamega governor, Wycliffe Oparanya.

EACC deputy executive officer Abdi Mohamud said the former governor was being investigated over the alleged misappropriation of KSh 1.3 billion during his tenure as the Kakamega county boss.

What EACC asked politicians regarding Oparanya's arrest

According to the anti-graft agency, preliminary investigations showed that public funds were unlawfully acquired through proxies.

"As part of an ongoing investigation into alleged embezzlement of public funds amounting to over Kes. 1.3 billion from Kakamega County Government during the reign of former governor Wycliffe Oparanya and where it was found that public funds were unlawfully acquired through proxies and associates," EACC said.

Mohamud said the ODM party deputy party leader was summoned to the Integrity Centre to clarify some issues.

The anti-graft agency asked political leaders not to politicise the ongoing investigations against the former Kakamega governor.

What ODM said about Oparanya's arrest

As earlier reported by TUKO.co.ke, EACC detectives raided three homes of the former Kakamega governor.

A statement from the Orange Democratic Movement party indicated that Oparanya and his wife Priscillah were taken to the EACC offices.

According to a report by Citizen TV, Oparanya and his two wives were apprehended by the EACC over alleged economic crimes committed during his reign as Kakamega county boss.

The officials raided the politician's homes with a search warrant.

"Oparanya, together with his wife, Madam Priscillah, are currently at the @EACCKenya offices at Integrity Centre. No information has been given as to why they have been arrested & why they are being questioned," ODM said.

Leaders from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party stormed the EACC offices, demanding to see the former Kakamega governor.
