Uasin Gishu - “Heroes are made in the hour of defeat. Success is, therefore, well described as a series of glorious defeats." Mahatma Gandhi.
Mercy Tarus understands this so well because, until Monday, August 7, she was just like any other ordinary graduate roaming in Eldoret town and trying to make ends meet.
She is among hundreds of students who fell victim to the now infamous Uasin Gishu County Government Oversees Scholarship Programme.
And perhaps in reflection of Mahatma Gandhi's words, when the affected parents and their children engaged the county leadership at the Eldoret Town Hall, Tarus stood out after she took the leaders head on without blinking an eye.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday, August 9, Tarus pleaded with President William Ruto to intervene, saying they were on the brink of losing hope of ever recovering the money embezzled in the scam.
"We just want our money back. We do not want any more excuses! Please, President William Ruto, intervene as Uasin Gishu is burning! The youths are desperate and depressed. We need our money as this government was meant to cater to the needs of hustlers," she said during the protests.
