Michael Joseph Exits Safaricom After Serving Telco For Over 20 Years

Safaricom PLC founding chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Joseph has resigned from the company's board.

The Safaricom board announced Michael's exit as a director effective August 1, 2023, after serving the telco for over 20 years.

Michael Joseph's career at Safaricom

In a public notice on Tuesday, August 9, the board acknowledged the veteran executive's roles that have steered the telco to greater heights.

"Michael Joseph has served in various capacities within Safaricom since 2000, including serving as the General Manager, Chief Executive Officer (twice), Director as well as Chairman if the Board," said Safaricom Board.

Michael also served on the board as a member and chairman of various committees and steered the company from 18,000 subscribers to over 17 million customers when he retired as CEO in 2010.

Michael Joseph achievements

He oversaw the launch of M-Pesa, the leading mobile money service in the country, and its related products in 2007.

He also initiated the Safaricom and M-Pesa Foundation, which have been significant in Kenya's education, health and culture conservation.

Michael leads to the phenomenal growth and development of innovative products and services at Safaricom.

"He has been integral to the important advances this Safaricom has made over the years, including the issuance of Safaricom's first Bond, the Initial Public Offer in 2007 and the branding out into Ethiopia," added the board.

He also worked together with the late Bob Collymore to launch the M-Pesa Academy.

Why Michael Joseph exits Safaricom

The board noted that Michael will focus on other ventures in his life, including continuing his role as Chairman of the Kenya Airways (KQ) Board.

He also serves as a director on various boards of different organizations.

"He will continue to pursue his passions in matters of conservation and community service. We wish him the very best for the future," said the Safaricom board.

John Ngumi resigns as Safaricom chair

Michael's resignation came barely a year after Safaricom made new board changes after John Ngumi's exit as chair.

Ngumi resigned as director and board chair effective December 22, 2022, barely five months after his appointment.

His exit followed key milestones achieved by the telecommunication company, including general election coverage, entry to Ethiopia and changes to Fuliza terms.
