Kenyan teachers will receive a salary increment of between 7% (for the highest paid) and 9.5% (for the lowest paid).
In a new deal signed between unions and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the lowest-paid teacher will pocket KSh 23,830 plus a house allowance of KSh 3,850.
Perks for lowest-paid teachers
TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia noted that other allowances assigned to the job group B5 - including commuting and leave - will remain the same.

“The new salary structure will be implemented immediately in the August payroll and backdated to July 1, 2023. We assure our teachers that they will receive their salaries by the end of the month,” said Macharia during the signing of the deal on Monday, August 28.
The basic salary for the job group B5 increased from KSh 21,756 to a minimum of KSh 22,793 for the year 2023 and KSh 23,830 for the year 2024.
Job group C1, earning a minimum of KSh 27,195, will pocket KSh 28,491 in their August 2023 pay slip and KSh 29,787 in 2024.
Highest paid teachers in Kenya
Teachers currently earning KSh 77,840 (job group D1), will receive a basic salary of KSh 78,625 in 2023.
Those earning KSh 104,644 (job group D3) will pocket KSh 105,182 and KSh 106,043 in 2024.
The highest-paid teachers clustered in job group D4 and above will also receive an increment of 7%, plus other allowances.
However, the unions said they are still pushing for a higher percentage, with Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT quoting 50%.
"I want to proudly say that we have already secured 10% . I want to tell TSC that we are coming for the next 50%," said KNUT Secretary-General Collins Oyuu.
SRC salary increment
President William Ruto approved the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) civil servants' pay rise recommendation of 7% to 10%.
SRC recommended a pay rise of KSh 27.1 billion to be paid to public workers, out of which the Kenya National Police Service (NPS) received 3.6 billion.
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome confirmed the salary increment that will see the least-paid officer take home KSh 34,135 in the August payslips.
