Her heart goes out to them as she understands the suffering they go through with no one to watch over them in their ripe age.

"Their loved ones abandoned them after getting married away from home. Some do not have children and have been forced to look after themselves by borrowing in the streets. They are like my children despite them being older than me. I am their mother because they depend on me for food and shelter," she told Afrimax English.

Woman with with sticks

Muthoni, from Embu county narrated a story of one of the elderly who stays with her in her humble home.

The kind-hearted lady said she met her in town, walking with her thin sticks as she borrowed money for food.

"My heart went out to her because she was old and struggled to fend for herself like the rest of the others. I took her in and became her caregiver," Muthoni shared.

Another, an 85-year-old man, had a similar story, but he borrowed money to buy medicine after a snake bit him.

As though that was not painful enough, he could not walk as he had fallen and broken his legs, which made his mobility challenging.

"Another woman, 82, fled from Kitui because of hunger. She joined another woman abandoned by her husband who went to Mombasa," she added.

In a different story, a Kwale KCPE candidate caring for grandma, 98, sought help to join high school.

Hellen Nzomo, 15, a third born in a family of five siblings, was abandoned by their mother at their elderly grandmother's home.

Her mother deserted them when she was 11 years old after breaking up with their polygamous father.

Nzomo received an admission letter to Siwot Secondary School in Nakuru.
