United Kingdom - Imagine being pregnant with no money in a foreign country; that is how Lydia Tett Olet found herself rummaging in bins to look for food that people who had more than enough threw out.

Tett's baby always small

Although she lived with her baby daddy then, there was no food because they were both immigrants from Kenya.

"There was no work; I was pregnant and the father of my kids did not have proper documentation, so we couldn't work," she told the African Tigress.

"The person we were living with just left us like that and there was no one to tell us what to do. We didn't have money for rent or food; we had a neighbour who used to throw bread in the bin and once he went to his house we would pick it up. We would pick discarded fruits in supermarkets as well," she added.

Whenever Tett went to the ante-natal clinics, her baby daddy would cry because the medical professionals always told her the baby was too small since she wasn't eating.

Tett starts insurance business

Eventually, the insurance expert went to the government and told her story; she finally got help.

Tett works in the insurance industry, and she said she joined it because she realised that many Kenyans and Africans turn to WhatsApp and GoFund Me whenever deaths occur and yet times are hard. But her insurance helps people in such times.

"A client called Mary claimed KSh.1.8 million and was happy I forced her to join. I have helped many Kenyans and Africans so far," she said.

Tett is also an event organiser, and her Kenyan and Friends in the Park events have connected 9000 Kenyans so far.

According to Tett, many people in the diaspora feel jealous because one is making a lot of money.

"If someone gives you information try to do your research, and everything is on the internet. Don't just depend on one source," said the lady who brings Kenyans in UK together through the bi-annual event.

Tett said that most people are closed off from each other for fear that other people may cause them to be deported.

Ugandan girl and her daughter die for starvation

"A Ugandan girl and her daughter died of starvation; where were the government, Ugandan community in UK, Africans, and the church?" she posed.
"Diaspora is an evil place. It's like there is a demon just hovering around; you see some people were very good in Kenya but the minute they enter this country they just change, they are just not good people," said the single mother of two.

Although she has been in the country long, Tett disclosed that she has an exit plan.

"My exit plan is Kenya: I want to enjoy the sun, and be with people that love and appreciate me. I am not going to an old people's place in this country," she said.
"The only thing letting Kenya down is security. Here I walk alone at 2am and I am not even scared that anyone will mug me," she revealed.

From primary school teacher to UK Mayor

Elsewhere, Elizabeth Kangethe narrated how she went from being a primary school teacher to a mayor in the UK.

Kang'ethe was born and raised in Kiambu county; she recalled walking long distances to school barefooted.

She left Kiambu when she went to Machakos Teaching College to pursue her diploma in Education.

Finally, she got employed and hit the ground running; for 13 years, she taught English, Religious Education and Home Science at Githunguri Township Primary School.

It was a girl guides trip to the UK twice that made her want to explore and see what the future still had in store for her.
