Machakos - Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua suggests the ongoing bipartisan talks would not yield anything to the advantage of Kenyans.

According to him, the engagements are a decoy of self-pleasing expedients advanced behind the scenes by Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga.

He said Raila was 'sorted' in Mombasa in an unpublicized meeting with President William Ruto.

Raila's 'handshake' with Ruto

The deputy president claimed that Raila approached Ruto for a share of government and ambassadorial posts, but all were in vain.

He revealed that Raila was instead offered an unmentioned amount of money on condition that he quits his anti-government politicking.

"There is nothing else he wants. He wanted a handshake and three ambassadorial posts, but we declined his demands. We told him if he wants some money then we can discuss," he said.

The deputy president spoke in Mwala, Machakos county, where he graced the burial of the area MP's mother.

Rigathi held that the bi-partisan talks are pointless and rather a waste of time.

He said the grounds on which the two sides resorted to meeting are not in the best interest of the commoners.

Azimio-Kenya Kwanza dalogue progress

The talks have been making progress, albeit slowly, after a bout of push and pull from the two sides.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka who was to lead the Azimio side in the dialogue has lately not been in attendance.

On Monday, August 21, both Azimio representatives and those of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance convened at Bomas of Kenya to continue with the peace talks.

The former vice president had not arrived at the venue, leaving National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah and Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi to take charge of the talks.

It was not clear whether the Wiper leader communicated his absence to the National Dialogue Committee.

The National Dialogue Committee is expected to receive a report from the technical team tasked with framing the agenda items for consideration by the committee.
